darkest day / longest night
SWEET DARKNESS
When your eyes are tired
the world is tired also.
When your vision has gone
no part of the world can find you.
It’s time to go into the night
where the dark has eyes
to recognize its own.
It’s time to go into the dark
where the night has eyes
to recognize its own.
There you
can be sure
you are not beyond love.
The dark will make a home for you tonight.
The night
will give you a horizon
further than you can see.
You must learn one thing.
The world was made to be free in.
Give up all the other worlds
except the one to which you belong.
Sometimes it takes darkness and the sweet
confinement of your aloneness
to learn
anything or anyone
that does not bring you alive
is too small for you.

wants, worries, walking
"Let me feel whole and happy with OR without this."
~ Tosha Silver, Change Me Prayers: The Hidden Power of Spiritual Surrender
“If it can be solved, there's no need to worry, and if it can’t be solved, worry is of no use.”
~ Dalai Lama XIV
“In one sense, the enlightened life is one of total insecurity; you live and act from the Unknown. We’re used to acting from the distorted sense of security that our mind provides, but freedom doesn’t operate that way. It’s a paradox. Precisely because you don’t know, and you know you don’t know, the door is wide open to know in each moment. That’s when you know -- in each moment. By resting in not knowing, knowing becomes available.”

the one, the only
Leonard Cohen Makes It Darker
At eighty-two, the troubadour has another album coming.
Like him, it is obsessed with mortality, God-infused, and funny.

“Does artistic dedication
begin to touch on religious devotion?” he said.
“I start with artistic
dedication.
I know that if the spirit is on you it will touch on to the
other
human receptors.
But I dare not begin from the other side.
It’s
like pronouncing the holy name—you don’t do it.
But if you are lucky,
and you are graced, and the audience is
in a particular salutary
condition,
then these deeper responses will be produced.”
(blessed to have been at the show in Charlottetown, P.E.I. on his 2008 tour)
by far, the most powerfully moving live performance I have ever experienced...

Only emptiness can give you more.
Any other kind of "more" becomes less,
intensifying your dissatisfaction
and cluttering your beingness.

life is a garden
not a road
we enter and exit
through the same
gate
wandering
where we go
matters less
than what we
notice
